I love it so much I made two! Bow Back Beauty Blog Tour with Little Kiwi’s Closet!

You know that “go to” pattern you keep using time and time again? Well I have found mine! I sew up a lot of patterns, usually just once, maybe twice. However, this pattern I have sewn a total of 5 times already. I think that is a record for me! I also happen to be on the Blog Hop with this pattern! I’m sure you already know what it is just by the photos. You guessed it! It’s the Bow Back Beauty by Little Kiwis Closet!

This amazing pattern is full of options, like most LKC patterns. Coming in size NB-12yrs this lap style shirt features a bow back for your little ladies. Don’t think this is just for the girls though. She also includes an option for a plain back for the boys. Make a onesie, a dress or peplum top, or how about a hi-low dress. Sewing for the cold weather, long sleeved is the way to go. Is it summer time for you? Well then short sleeved or sleeveless is just perfect. Yes, all these options and more are included in this pattern. Seriously, the value is unbelievable! There is also a new unique way of doing binding, which is now my favorite way. This is a pretty fast sew. I can sew up one now in about 1.5-2hrs depending on the options I have chosen. Lydia does a great job with the tutorial, and I think even a knit beginner could make some awesome items with this pattern!

Now, to tell you about mine! When I tested this pattern I made a hip length peplum top with long sleeves and an onesie with skirt with short sleeves. I also had the pleasure of making this cute owl inspired dress in a size 4y for a special little girl. I decided to add the knit binding to the skirt for this one! Love! For the two for this tour I sewed for the spring! The first one is a double layered dress-Minnie inspired. To make the double layer I used the peplum pattern piece and the skirt pattern piece. Now, I did shorten the skirt as my girl is short to begin with and I lettuce-edged the hem. So this dress with the natural waist bodice length is a size 12mo, with the skirt being at the 3-6mo length. For the next garment I wanted something completely different! I wanted a romper!! So I scrolled through my other LKC patterns and decided to mash the BBB with the Romp n’ Play! I used the size 12mo bottom and that attached very nicely to the 12mo bodice with a little gathering. The only other change I made for this one is that I added an inch of length to the natural waist length bodice so that it was a tad longer. It is absolutely perfect!!!!

You really can’t beat the options in this pattern. Then if you are the adventurous type like me you can modify it so many ways to create a different look each time!!! I think next I will try a romper with a little skirt. This is now my go to pattern for baby gifts too! So, you ready to sew up yours yet? Well hop on over and pick it up. Celebrating Spring on the Blog Tour with MCM Studio Designs!!

Finally spring seems to be coming, slowly but surely! The best way to celebrate it is with a blog tour, of course! Today we are celebrating spring with MCM Studio Designs and their Estherlyn’s Jumper. Why may you ask? Well if you haven’t already figured that out from the photos, then read on my friend!

First, let me start off by saying that this A-line jumper is just perfect for every season! As you can see it isn’t warm enough yet for sleeveless dresses, so layering is a must. There is plenty of room for layering with this jumper! OK, now that I have gotten that out, let me continue with a little more about the pattern. The Estherlyn jumper comes in sizes 3m-10yrs and features a curved apron front and button shoulder closures. The apron front is fully lined so no showing the wrong side of the fabric should the wind pick up! Speaking of lining, you can create this fully lined or half lined- your choice! The detailed tutorial for this pattern is wonderfully done. It walks you through each step and even includes tips making this easy for a beginner to complete! There is even a section on where and when to add trim if you’d like!

 

 

Now let’s take a look at my jumper, shall we? My baby girl is in a size 12mo here, which fits her perfectly! I just love every aspect of this jumper, and it is super quick to make! This took about 1.5hrs if I remember correctly. For my dress I finished the edges of the apron and hem with bias tape from Fascinating Finery instead of doing a traditional hem. The length of the dress is 3/8″ longer as I did forget to cut that off! Oops! In my version I opted for the partial lining. Now instead of doing a traditional hem on the lining, I just surged it as it is on the inside. Yes, I cheated a bit. Last but not least, I closed my jumper with snaps as I couldn’t decide on the perfect buttons! Snaps work for us, though, and make closing the closer a snap!! Sorry, couldn’t resist.

A Little Something for a Little Bunny to Keep Warm!

Have you ever seen a pattern and was like, “I need this and I need to make this now”? Well that has happened to me! It really couldn’t have happened with a better or cuter pattern either! Perfect timing too with Easter right around the corner and supposedly spring too. This pattern suits both! Let’s take a look at the Chic Cocktail Swing Coat by Heidi and Finn.

I recently got this pattern while it was on sale. I just fell in love with the bunny ears! If you don’t know from my previous posts (you should really check them out!) my girl’s animal is a bunny! Needless to say, she needed this in her life. Bunny ears aren’t the only option though. There are many with the pattern. You can make it hood or collar, plain or eared hood (bunny and bear included), and button or tie closure. Make it with heavy material for the cold months or lightweight for the warmer months! It comes in two size packages which are 12mo-5T or 6y-12y. Oh, did I mention this is fully lined with no expose seams? This is a perfect pattern for a beginner too as the tutorial walks you through every step and there really are no tricky parts. Well except perhaps sewing through thick material. I may have broken two needles on this project! It didn’t take too long either. About 3-4 hours total and that included lunch time!

For my coat I sized up and made a size 18mo to make sure this would last through not only the spring but also the fall for my little peanut. I choose a heavy weight material for my main fabric and a flannel for my lining. Now my main fabric is nice and fuzzy. Feels like velour but has weight to it. I think it’s actually upholstery fabric! I don’t really know as I got it at a tag sale last summer. I just love how this turned out! I see more of these in my future once she outgrows this one. I wonder how I could turn it into a horse… I will have to think on that!

Now the pattern isn’t on sale anymore but it is worth every penny to get it! When you do get it and sew it up don’t forget to show off your creations in the Heidi and Finn group too! Can’t wait to see what you create!

 

Getting ready for Easter with Mandy K and the Bon Bon Dress!

Are you busy sewing up those Easter dresses yet? Perhaps you are ahead of the gang and have those all finished? Or are you like me and usually wait till the last minute? Well if you are still looking then I have the perfect dress for you. This one is another awesome dress from Mandy K Designs! You ready?

Take a look at the Bon Bon dress! When she first shared this design with me I instantly fell in love and couldn’t wait to sew this up. I knew this would be baby girl’s Easter dress right away! This dress features a scoop like neckline that encircles all the way around to accent the front and the open scoop back. The skirt is a circle skirt with all the twirl power a girl could want! Do you see Ruth is learning to twirl?! Seriously cute, and I’m not just saying that because I’m her mother. That is part of it, don’t get me wrong, but seriously it’s so so cute! I digress again; let’s go back to the dress now. There are no closures to worry about as the bodice has enough room to slip this beauty on. Whether you are looking for a sun dress or special occasions dress this is perfect for any girl coming in sizes 12mo-14. Don’t forget that this also includes an 18″ doll size for your little ladies special friend! Want to add a little something to define the waist? You can make a belt to accent it as that is also included in the tutorial. With all Mandy K’s patterns the tutorial is well put together to walk you through each step without any issues making this perfect for the advanced beginner and those of more advanced sewing years!

Guess what? I learned something new with this pattern! Don’t you love learning? I have never heard of horse hair braid. Well, except when I braid my horse’s tail! Somehow I didn’t think my horse had anything to do with this though. No, horse hair braid is a type of netting that is used as a stiffener to give body to hemlines. You can get the look of a poofy skirt without the extra skirt underneath! This is amazing stuff. Wish I had learned about it before. Mandy walks you through how to easily use this to hem your skirt and give it that extra oomph! Gasp, I love the poof!!

My girl is twirling around in a size 12mo dress. The fit is perfect on her! The doll dress also fits perfectly on her doll. For added ease of dressing her doll the straps are made differently than the girl’s dress. For the doll the straps are not sewn on the shoulder seam. Rather they are finished and Velcro is attached. I think it may work with snaps as well. I know I do want to try snaps instead of Velcro next time. To make the dress even a little more extra special, I added eyelet to the collar by sandwiching it in between before sewing. With just barely enough eyelet left over for the hem as well (alright, I’ll fess up. I technically didn’t have enough and had to add an extra 4″ of another eyelet to finish it!). I couldn’t be happier with the end result. It really came out as I was hoping it would!

Girly or Sporty Girl? Both with Sofilantjes and the Gemini Skirt!

As you know I am a big fan of indie designers. Now if you don’t know what an indie designer is, don’t worry, it took me a bit to figure it out too! Indie stands for independent. So indie designers are independent designers. For the longest time I thought it had to do something with India! LOL, yes I do have my moments! One of my favorite indie designers is Sofilantjes! She is taking the PDF world by storm and already has made her mark by influencing other designers. She is a trendsetter in the PDF world for sure!

Today we are looking at the Gemini Skirt bundle that was just released! I was lucky enough to test this one. Let me tell you that this is now one of my favorite skirt patterns. There are two skirts in this bundle. One for the sporty type and one for the girly type! The sporty one features a kangaroo pocket and is more fitted. The girly one is a double circle skirt for twirling fun! Both come in sizes NB-12y. This is a very easy pattern and perfect for a beginner. The instructions are very clear with illustrations and you can even print just the size you need with the layer option!! Oh, did I mention how fast this is to sew? Super fast!!

Perfect for running and jumping!!

During the testing phase I made three skirts. Two circle skirts and one sporty skirt. The circle skirt I made out of knit and woven! This pattern is designed for knits but I took a chance and tried it out in woven. It worked! I didn’t even need to size up either. This wasn’t tested in woven for each size so I don’t know how it would work on the bigger sizes, but it worked in the size 9-12mo which is the size I tested!

 

Now I knew I wanted to make more of these skirts so as soon as I got my new knits washed I made two more!! I made these ones bigger than what my girl wears as I want them to last awhile. She has so many clothes that fit now I am making more in bigger sizes so they are ready when she grows, which is happening every day! The Tinkerbelle skirt is a size 18-24mo and the pink skirt is a size 12-18mo. Now the pattern doesn’t come with size 12-18mo (it has 9-12mo and 18-24mo). So an easy way to create the 12-18mo is to just draw a line in-between the other two sizes! Easy peasy!

Blog Tour! Dressing Minnie Style with One Thimble!!!

 

Are you ready for another blog tour? What an amazingly crazy creative week! Don’t you just love those kinds of weeks? I do! Today we are on tour for the release of issue 6 of One Thimble! What?! You don’t know what One Thimble is? Let me educate you as anyone in the sewing world has to know about One Thimble!

One Thimble is a great e-mag filled with so much eye candy for the seamstress connoisseur! It is put together to teach and refresh the skills of the beginner and the advanced seamstress all at the same time. Need photography help to show off your creations? They’ve got you covered! Need a refresher on interfacing? They’ve got you covered! Need advice on your sewing business? They’ve got you covered! Need 10 awesome patterns? Silly question I know, but you guessed it, they’ve got you covered!! There is something for everyone in here!!

Shout out to one of the sewing tips! Included is a tutorial called Pattern Matching by Brooke Sleep from Bug & Miss. This tutorial shows you how to get that amazing pattern layout every time. If you are anything like me, most of the time I cut and then realize I should have cut a different way to make things match up or feature a different part of the fabric. Then I cut again to fix that mistake. Or just say forget it and just leave it the way it is. After all only pros can get everything to match up perfectly, right? Wrong!! This tutorial shows you how to get it right the first time and achieve that perfect layout! On a side note, obviously I didn’t read the tutorial prior to making my items. I definitely should have!

I had the pleasure of sewing up two patterns from this issue. It was extremely hard to pick which ones to sew up as I want to sew them all! I finally settled on the Hannah Dress by Bobkin and the Gatsby Flat Cap by Apple + Fig. I have never sewn a pattern by these designers so I was excited to try them out.

 

First up is the Hannah Dress. This dress is so cute with its button front and collar. It was designed for everyday wear and certainly can transition throughout the seasons with layering. It comes in sizes 1-8 so you can create this for your little lady as she continues to grow. My favorite part of the dress is the lined bodice! No exposed seams to itch my little miss around her midsection. It gives that amazing professional finish too! The tutorial was clear and easy to follow as all patterns featured in One Thimble are. This is an intermediate pattern and took about 3 hours to complete. Oh, and it also has pockets- now who doesn’t love pockets?

To complete baby girl’s Minnie inspired outfit I created the Gatsby cap. I have been looking for a pattern that gave that Newsboys look for awhile but didn’t find any that caught my attention. Until now that is! I was quite surprised at how easy this was too! This ranges in size from XXS-XXL (babies to adults) so you can use this one for the whole family! The younger sizes give the option for an elastic brim in back to help fit on those growing heads. There is also a sweatband on the inside for added comfort. Now this pattern was designed for outerwear fabrics, but I decided to give it a go in quilting cotton. Baby girl needed a cap to match her dress after all! It worked out beautifully! Seriously, I can’t handle the cuteness I helped create! I would say this is an intermediate pattern as well due to easing and sewing curves. They can be a little difficult sometimes to get those perfect without puckering (something I’m still working on!).

There are so many things to learn and sew with the One Thimble e-mag. I love reading every issue that is released quarterly. Every time I sew an item I continue to grow in my sewing skills. One Thimble has certainly helped me along the way! You can purchase your own copy for $25. This is quite a steal for all the goodies inside. Blog Tour! Two Extraordinary Girls for Two Extraordinary Girls with Filles a Maman!

How many of you have patterns that you want to sew but just haven’t gotten around to? Or perhaps you need a deadline or some other motivation to actually get you sewing? Yes, I am one of those too!! I will procrastinate till the bitter end if you let me! So, what better motivation to sew a pattern I have been wanting to sew than to participate in a blog tour? Today we are on tour with the Filles a Maman Extraordinary Girl. Honestly, I don’t know why I waited so long to make this! Keep reading and you will find out why!

Let’s start with a bit about the pattern first. This comes in both girls (12mo-14) and women’s (XS-XXL) sizes. I love the neckline as it veers from the traditional neckline and offers a more modern one. Also perfect for bigger heads to get through! The pattern also offers 2 sleeve lengths of 3/4 and long. Want to know the best part about the pattern? The option for color blocking. The way this is designed lets you have a little fun, or not. It’s up to you!

Now on to the part I have been waiting for!!! Let me tell you about the ones I made!! But first I have to give a big thank you to Trixie over at Trixie’s Fabrics and Kiddie Duds Boutique for helping me find some of the Yellow Brick Road fabric for this project. She went above and beyond the call of duty and I thank her sooo much! My mom loves Wizard of Oz so I was able to surprise her with this shirt thanks to Trixie! Oh, and one more thing, this is my mom Barbara. She’s pretty awesome and the best mom ever! I know I’m a little biased, but it was time you all met her properly!

Ok, now back to the shirts. For mom I made a size large. I went with the traditional color blocking for this shirt. As you can see the fit is great and really shows her great curves. I think she loves it. What do you think? Now for baby girl I wanted to do a little something different. I wanted to make this a dress with a circle skirt. First, I shortened the shirt. I eyeballed it with the skirt pattern piece I had to make the right length. Unfortunately I cut off a bit too much in front. See that yellow band in front? Yup, I had to even it out. Turned out to be a happy accident, though, as I love more color blocking! For the skirt pattern I used Dandelions n’ Dungarees Saucy Skirt. The size 18mo fit perfectly on the 12-18mo top! I just love this as a dress!! The fit is spot on too!

Honestly, I really don’t know why I waited so long to make this pattern. And I really need to make a bunch more too as they are super easy and super fun to make. Classic Elegance with Sewing Mama Raeanna and the Bumblebee Dress!

Classic. Elegant. When you read that, what do you think of? Well after you see today’s pattern you will always associate those two words with it! I know I do! This dress we are looking at today is one I have been eyeing for a very long time but didn’t make until now. Guess I have been too busy testing patterns that I neglected all the great patterns in my stash. I am sure from the photos you have already seen that you know the designer! Yes, we are looking at the Bumblebee Dress by Sewing Mama Raeanna today!

 

The Bumblebee dress is such a sweet dress and I now wish I had made it sooner. This comes in sizes 3m-12 so it will be perfect for any girl little or big. It features two looks in one pattern. You can make a dress with a ruffle bodice and 3/4 sleeves with ruffles or make a sleeveless dress with a ruffle neckline! Mix and match these options, along with a ruffle hemline for different looks each time. The bodice is perfect for embroidery and the back closes with a button.  Make a version for the cooler months or the warmer months. Either way this pattern has you covered and it’s perfect for a beginner too!

Before I tell you a little about the dress I made, let me tell you about how I came about the choices I made for the dress. I fell in love with this paper doll fabric from Trixie’s Fabrics. There is a boy version and a girl version. I couldn’t choose which I loved more! So I combined both into this dress. I love the cohesive contrast that it gives. Let me just say that I love the gems I find from Trixie’s Fabrics. Whether its knits or wovens, she is sure to have something I love. Add the fact that she has great customer service; well I’m a customer for life! I think my wallet may have just cringed with that confession!

Now on to my dress. With my vintage looking paper doll fabric I knew I needed a little something more than just woven ruffles. Lace. If you know me, you know I love lace. The lace on the bodice ruffles and sleeves just gave it that look I was going for. Classic. Elegant. I am completely in love with this dress. As you can see, this one is a bit big on my girl. I went back and forth on the size to make. Her chest put her in the 6m size but she wears 12mo in RTW. Thinking I know best and not the measurements I made a straight 12mo size. Yup, it’s big. Note to self…always go by the measurements!! Some days I think I know it all, even when I know better than that. Well, on the plus side, we can enjoy this beauty for that much longer!

Bow-licious with the Otium by Sofilantjes!

Who just loves blog tours? I know I do, especially when I am part of them! Today I couldn’t be more excited to be part of the Otium blog tour with Sofilantjes. The designer behind Sofilantjes is an awesome woman by the name of Annemieke. I have had the pleasure of testing and making many patterns by Annemieke and just love all her designs. Needless to say I jumped on the chance to be a part of her blog tour too!!

Let’s take a look at the Otium pattern shall we? First of all, here’s a little lesson in language. Otium means ease in Latin. Yes, I Googled it. The name and meaning is quite fitting and perfect for this very comfy shirt pattern. Coming in sizes 12m-14yrs and women’s XS-XXXL this pattern is great for all the girls and women in our lives, including you! There are many options in both sizes as well. Options include 3 sleeve lengths (long, 3/4, and short) and 3 shirt options (diagonal pocket, low back with bow, or regular shirt). All are finished with cuffs on the sleeves and a waist band which means no hemming!! That is not to say you can’t hem it, but really why hem if you don’t have to? The tutorial walks you through each step accompanied by illustrations so even a beginner to knits can perfect this one. Yes, the ease in which it is made and the ease that you feel in wearing it…yes, the name says it all.

For this tour I not only had the pleasure of making another shirt for my baby girl but also to do a little self care sewing for myself! First let’s take a look at baby girls top. For hers I made the size 12mo with the low bow back. The fit is great. Nice and relaxing. For my top I also made the low bow back but I was able to fit it so it fits me perfectly. Annemieke knows all women are beautiful in all different shapes and sizes. In the pattern it shows how to fit the top to fit all of our more curvy areas where ever they may be. Using her instructions I was able to make my top to fit my size M bust with my size L hips. The fit is perfect!! I used fleece on both tops and it worked out beautifully. I was even able to use it for the collar with just a little extra length added to the collar measurement per the suggestion from the tutorial as well! This pattern really sets you up for success!

You may not be able to see, but baby’s girls fabric says “I love Grandma”.  Perfect opportunity to take some cute pics of her and Grammy!!

Bundle Up with EYMM’s Freestyle Harem Pants!

 

It’s that time again! Time to Bundle Up! No I’m not talking about staying warm for cold weather, although with the current snow storm here in New England we are doing just that. I’m talking about that time of the year when you can get 11 new patterns at a fraction of the cost; and the more you buy, the more you save. I’m sure you know the theme by now. But in case you don’t, this sale’s theme is for the girls! I absolutely love all the patterns and now own them all. These will certainly help keep my girl stylish for awhile.

Today we are taking a closer look at one pattern on the Bundle Up tour! The Freestyle by Everything Your Mama Made (EYMM) is a fun and comfy pattern for girls, and boys too! It comes in sizes NB-18 as well as 18″ doll. There are many options with this pattern such as 3 lengths (shorts, capris, and pants), 2 waistbands (straight or pointed), and 3 hem options (plain, cuff, or elastic). You could make many different looks with this one! The back has elastic for fit and comfort. The hardest part of the pattern is making the pleats, which isn’t hard at all!

I used a very cool woven fabric I have been hoarding for awhile waiting for the perfect pattern. Well this was it! I just knew it as soon as I saw the pattern. I couldn’t be happier with the results. For baby girl I made the 12-18mo with the pointed waistband and elastic hem. The fit is great with room to grow. She looks absolutely adorable (yes, I’m a little biased) and comfy in these. I also made matching doll pants too! Don’t they make such a cute pair?
